The Fourth Ministerial Meeting of the China-Latin America Forum was held in Beijing on May 13th. One of the "Four Horses" and the incoming rotating chair of the Community of Latin American and Latin American Communities (CELAC), Uruguayan President Amandu Orsi, recently gave an exclusive interview to a reporter from China Media Group in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. He highly praised the China-Latin American Forum mechanism and expressed great expectations for the future development of relations between Latin America and China as well as between Uruguay and China.
In January 2015, the first ministerial meeting of the China-Latin America Forum was successfully held in Beijing, marking the official launch of the China-Latin America Forum. This year marks the 10th year of the vigorous development of the China-Latin America Forum. In your opinion, what role has the forum played in promoting the development of China-Latin America relations?
Uruguayan President Yamandu Orsi: The China-Latin America Forum has been established for 10 years. The new ministerial meeting was held in China. Facts have proved that the China-Latin America Forum is a very effective mechanism and also has a very bright future. The world has a tendency towards division. I think it is what we expect to find and strengthen those mechanisms that can transcend political changes and ensure the stability of relations.
As one of the "Four horses" in the China-Latin America Forum mechanism, Uruguay will succeed Colombia as the next rotating chair of the Community of Latin America in 2026. Orsi believes that Uruguay has great potential in this mechanism.
Uruguayan President Yamandu Orsi: We are looking forward to Uruguay taking the rotating presidency of the Community of Latin American and Latin American Communities next year and continuing the tradition of the past decade to strengthen the development of the China-Latin American Forum, a multilateral platform. We must protect both sides of Latin America and China with care. Through the achievements made at this year's meeting, we should not only succeed in the business field, but also contribute to promoting a peaceful world. For our region and country, the best thing in this world is free trade and economic flow. History has proved that this is the correct path. Uruguay firmly defends the multilateralism of the World Trade Organization and the principles of United Nations agencies.
If you were to use one key word to describe the relationship between China and Ukraine, what would it be and why?
Uruguayan President Yamandu Orsi: The key word that comes to my mind is "stability". Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Uruguay and China, Uruguay has experienced nine presidents from different political parties. I am the ninth one. However, the working line for developing relations with China and deepening cooperation is continuous. I believe that the political mutual trust between the two countries and the will of the Uruguayan people provide a solid foundation and a promising future for bilateral relations. The economic, trade and cultural ties between Uruguay and China are deepening increasingly.
Orsey believes that China's correct development path and the hard work of its people have contributed to its current high-quality development.
Uruguayan President Yamandu Orsi: China is different from a country like ours. It is a model of the integration of different regions with diverse circumstances into the country's grand blueprint. This is not only about the population size, but also about the joint efforts of all ethnic groups in China. For a long time, China has had to maintain the well-being of such a huge population while achieving economic development with global influence. It has been very difficult to strike a balance between the two. I see that China has successfully achieved a balance between the two.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. Orsey expressed his respect for China's contributions to the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War.
Uruguayan President Yamandu Orsi: I cannot forget the sacrifice of the Chinese people in World War II. Today, 80 years later, I pay tribute to the Chinese people and other nations that have experienced wars.
